The huge landmass that is Alaska creates a wide variety of habitats for many species of mammals and more than 400 species of birds fill the skies. The tundra and alpine meadows host the grizzly bear, caribou, and large bull moose. Black bears can be seen below the timberline, along with the smaller bull moose, cows, and their calves. The polar bear, very rarely seen in the summer, inhabits the arctic coastal areas, along with the walrus. The offshore waters are home to whales, dolphins, seals, sea otters, sea lions, and more.
