Angkor Wat is an ancient temple complex located 4 miles from Siem Reap in northwest Cambodia. Designated as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1992, the Angkor Wat temples are the jewel of Southeast Asia’s Cultural Tourism market and one of the architectural wonders of the world. Once the royal seat of the wealthy and advanced Khmer Empire, there are more than 1000 temples in the area surrounding Angkor, and approximately 40 major temples including Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon, Ta Prohm, and Banteay Srey.The serenely beautiful Angkor Wat was centered on the worship of the god-king who built it as his final resting place. Based on religious concepts adapted from India, Angkor and its components were models of the universe. Systems of resevoirs, canals and moats served the practical purpose of irrigation but also reflected the symbolic concept of an ocean surrounding a central mountain. Angkor Wat was designed by the king’s architect and built from a wax model by artisian workers and slaves who transported stones. It was completely built within 37 years. The designs represent the myth of the early century, Vishu, Krisha, and Roma, a vision of manifold heavens and Hells.

Angkor Wat begins with the outer gallery that runs in a circumference of a half a mile. The five central towers represent the peak of the Mount Meru, the center of the universe. The outer wall represents the mountains at the edge of the world. Every surface is richly decorated with figures of maidens, or apsara, into the stone tapestry. Mix of small details and massive architecture, Angkor Wat is cathedral-like in its harmonious. Flanked by libraries, face west is the main gateway. Sras Srang, the royal bath of Jaraman, which surrounded the Angkor Wat a century ago, once full of water, is now full of grass.
